Ron Haselden

'Day and Night, Night and Day'

LONDON'S FIRST NEON INTERACTIVE ART INSTALLATION

New Street Square, London

British artist Ron Haselden's latest work has been unveiled at Land Securities' multi award-winning development, New Street Square, London. The installation, commissioned by Land Securities, is London's first piece of neon interactive art, and will give members of the public a unique opportunity to create their own designs.

Day and Night, Night and Day will form an ever-changing 40-metre tapestry of light and colour, suspended along a central walkway at New Street Square. The installation took four years to create from commission to installation, and has been designed to complement the physical fabric and design of the surrounding architecture. It has also been conceived to stimulate and engage people who work in the area.

Until 6 November, public visitors to the development are invited to submit their creative ideas for designs and colourways when they visit New Street Square by filling out a simple design form. Ron Haselden will select one winner and three runner-up designs. The winner will have the opportunity to meet the artist and see their design unveiled in late November. The winning design will be on public view at New Street Square for one week. All three runners-up will then have their design concepts displayed on the neon installation.

Commenting on the commission, Ron Haselden said: "The inspiration for Day and Night, Night and Day is taken from the surrounding architecture of New Street Square. The changing tapestry of neon arcs brings a soft weaving quality that compliments the asymmetrical design of the buildings.

I wanted to create a piece of work that would invite more than just observation and give people an opportunity to interact with the piece in a different way. I'm excited to see how people will engage with 'Day and Night, Night and Day' and look forward to seeing their creative interpretations."

The neon light elements appear as long threads of coloured light made up of small undulating curves, weaving diagonally through space as they traverse the rectangular outline of the sculpture. Each single thread in the tapestry can be programmed to change through an infinite number of colours as a result of adjusting the density of red, green and blue neon fabricated into each light element.
