Dan Proops - Bronze Nefertiti
The Empire Gallery presents Dan Proops' 2008 Solo Show
May 1st - 13th, 2008
In the sell out show 'Sam's Desktop' (2006), Dan Proops referenced modern
life from Internet porn to the Iraq War.
In Sam's Desktop II (2007), Proops addressed our ambivalent relationship
with images, our cynicism of the mechanics of global branding and our
constant yielding to its power. International online cultural magazine
Flavorpill described the show as "dark, defiant and shocking."
In this riveting new show, Proops creates a collection of dazzling and
powerful pieces, including a reworking of Dali's 1954 'Hypercubic Body'. By
setting it within the framework of a computer desktop, Proops is commenting
on the new 'religion' of modern computing and the classical tradition of
fine art painting.
Proops integrates our obsession with the fleeting progression of technology
with the epic tradition of fine art painting. He has taken the Microsoft OS
as a subject matter for paintings in oil on canvas is pioneering new
theories relating to the design concepts and visualisations that contribute
to the design of the modern day operating system.
Proops, who has been exhibiting since the age of fourteen, is an Honours
graduate from Goldsmiths whose work has been exhibited in over twenty five
shows in London including Cork Street and The Serpentine Gallery. He has
been represented by art dealer Eric Franck with whom he has exhibited at Art
Brussels and The London Art fair.
He is a sought after artist for major private collectors including the
cartoonist Tom Johnston and award winning BBC Documentary maker Michael
Cockerel. Recently Proops was involved with the Microsoft DesignIT
competition for IT professionals to design new systems for their favourite
charity.
