The British Orientalists: Eastern Views, Western Eyes
3-27 June 2008
Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm
To coincide with The Lure of the East: British Orientalist Painting to be held at the Tate Britain this summer, the Mathaf Gallery will be holding an exhibition of Orientalist paintings by British artists. The Exhibition will consist of paintings by both 19th Century British Orientalists and contemporary artists who have visited the Middle East.
The 19th century works will include delicate Nile and desert views by Augustus Osborne Lamplough and Robert George Talbot Kelly, colourful and detailed genre scenes by Charles Robertson, richly textured oils by the Pre-Raphaelite artists William Webbe and William Gale, equestrian scenes by John Alexander Harington Bird, and topographical and architectural views by Henry Andrew Harper, David Roberts and Edward Lear, plus many more.
Representing contemporary Orientalism will be June Bartlett’s breezy views of the Gulf, paintings of the Arabian horse by Peter Upton, evocative mountain landscapes by David Bellamy and Vanessa Hodgkinson’s abstract calligraphy-inspired panels.
